Standing For ThemIsaiah 49:25

Her Daughter Is Still In There

This message is for a woman who got out and whose grown daughter chose to stay, who has to hold a phone she cannot call and a door she cannot open, and who needs to stand for her child without a timetable and without taking the blame

Marcelle got out in 2023 and Danielle did not, and Danielle is twenty-six and made her own decision and that is the whole difficulty.

If she were a child this would be a different article and a different set of phone numbers. She is not. She is a grown woman who understood what her mother was leaving and what she was leaving it for, and who said, at the kitchen table, with her arms folded, "I am staying."

That was seventeen months ago.

They talk. Not much and not easily, but they talk, and every conversation has a floor under it that neither of them steps through. Marcelle asks about work. Danielle answers. Nobody mentions the house or the terms or the man or the year.

Here is what Marcelle does with the rest of it.

She has a phone with her daughter's number in it and a list in her head of about six things she could say that she has decided not to say. She has an address she does not drive past because she knows what she would do if she saw the car. She has a Sunday, every Sunday, that is worse than the rest of the week.

And she has a sentence that arrives at about four in the morning maybe twice a week, and the sentence is: if I had stayed, she would have come out with me.

Here is the day it caught.

A woman at church, meaning nothing but kindness, said, "How is Danielle?"

And Marcelle said, "She is well, thank you."

And the woman said, "You must be so proud of how you handled everything."

And Marcelle smiled and said thank you and went and sat in her car for twenty minutes before she could drive.

You know that. Somebody you love chose to stay, and you have a sentence at four in the morning that you have never said out loud to anybody, and it has been running the whole seventeen months.

Her Daughter Is Still In There

Who does the contending

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you what to say to Danielle. I do not know her, or that house, or what would land. I am not going to tell you to drive past or not to. And I am not going to tell you that she will come out, because I do not know that, and telling a mother that about her own daughter would be an unforgivable thing to do with a verse.

What I will do is read you a promise in Isaiah and be very careful about who is doing what in it.

But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.Isaiah 49:25

Now. Notice the verbs and notice whose they are.

I will contend. I will save. Both of them are God's, stated in the first person, addressed to a people who at that moment could do absolutely nothing about their own situation.

There is no instruction in that verse. There is nothing for the person being addressed to perform. It is a statement about who is going to be doing the work.

You are being told who does the contending, and it is not the parent standing outside the house. Isaiah 49:25 puts both verbs in God's mouth in the first person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a car in a church parking lot.

And I am going to be careful with the last clause, because it gets misused and misusing it on a mother would be a wicked thing.

I will save thy children is spoken to Zion about a nation. It is not a promissory note about a particular twenty-six-year-old on a particular street, and I will not hand it to you as one. What it establishes is the direction of God's disposition toward the children of His people, and that disposition is not neutral and it is not passive.

You are not holding a guarantee about your daughter, and you are also not standing in front of a God who is indifferent to her. It is written that He contends with the one who contends, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a real assurance from being inflated into a forecast.

The sentence at four in the morning

Now let me be careful here, because this is the whole point of this article.

If I had stayed, she would have come out with me.

That sentence is not true, and it is not a small thing, and it has been running seventeen months without ever once being examined in daylight.

Here is what is wrong with it. It assumes that Danielle's decision was a response to her mother's, rather than a decision of her own. And Danielle is twenty-six. She sat at a table with her arms folded and said a sentence. That was hers.

To say she would have come out with me is to take a grown woman's decision and reassign it to her mother. It sounds like humility. It is actually a way of removing Danielle's own agency, and it puts the whole weight of another adult's life onto one person who was, at the time, running for her own.

You are not the author of your daughter's decision, and treating yourself as its cause is not humility, it is an error about who she is. Ezekiel 18:20 says plainly that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father nor the father the iniquity of the son, and the Holy Spirit is the one who returns a grown person's choices to them.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the four in the morning sentence has gone somewhere darker than grief, or if Sundays have become more than you can hold, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. A friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. And if you ever believe your daughter is in real danger, then the ordinary thing to do is call for help where you live rather than manage it alone. That is me refusing to leave you in that car by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than seventeen months.

It does not ask you to call her. It does not ask you to drive past the house or to stay away from it. It does not ask you to say anything to Danielle at all, or to stop wanting her out, or to feel differently about 2023.

It asks you to say the four in the morning sentence out loud in daylight, and then to say what is actually true.

The first part is: if I had stayed, she would have come out with me. Say it out loud, in a room, in the daytime, because a sentence that has only ever been said at four in the morning has never been looked at properly.

And then the second part: that is not true. She is twenty-six and she chose, and I am not the reason.

And then bless her.

You are entitled to put a false sentence down, because Scripture assigns responsibility person by person and refuses to let it travel. Ezekiel 18:20 is that refusal, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a returned weight actually leave a person's hands.

You have been standing for your daughter every one of those seventeen months, and not one of them was canceled by the sentence at four in the morning. It is written that He will contend with him that contendeth, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient contending into a house you cannot enter.

You are not the one contending for her, and Isaiah puts that verb in the first person and keeps it there. Isaiah 49:25 has God saying I will, twice, to people who could do nothing, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a rest rather than a slogan.

Whether Danielle comes out, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What today settles is who carries what.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the car with the engine off. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has been contending for that house since long before 2023. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about your daughter, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Blame I have carried since I left, you are not the truth about that house and you never were. Isaiah 49 says God contends with the one who contends, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Sentence that comes at four in the morning, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written in Ezekiel 18:20 that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father nor the father the iniquity of the son, and the same Spirit who carried that word carries me, so a grown woman's decision is her own.
  3. Lord, You said I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and Isaiah 49:25 is where You put both of those verbs in Your own mouth. I thank You that the contending was never mine to do from a parking lot, and by Your Spirit I am saying her name out loud in the daylight today.
