Rachel got out in 2022 and Bethany did not, and Bethany is her younger sister and there is nothing whatsoever that Rachel can do about it.
She has tried. She wants that on the record before anything else, because there is a certain kind of person who reads a story like this and assumes the one who got out has been passive. She has not been passive.
She tried in 2022, straight away, badly, in the way you do when you are still shaking. She tried in 2023 with a printed list of practical things, which was a mistake and which Bethany still refers to. She tried once in 2024, gently, over coffee, and got about eleven words in before Bethany said, "Do not."
And that was the last time.
Here is what happens now. They talk every week. They talk about their mother and about Bethany's kids and about a program they both watch, and it is a real relationship and Rachel is not pretending. And about every third call Bethany says a sentence that Rachel used to say. Word for word, sometimes. The exact defenses, the exact softening, the same three-word explanation Rachel used to hand people at the door.
And Rachel says nothing, because she has learned that saying something costs her the call, and the call is the only thing she has.
Here is the day it caught.
Her friend, who knows the whole thing, said, "Do you still pray about her?"
And Rachel said, "Every day."
And her friend said, "What do you pray?"
And Rachel started to answer and found that what she has been praying, for two years, is a plan. A detailed one. With steps in it, and timings, and a preferred sequence of events.
You know that. Somebody you love is still inside it, and you have run out of things to say, and what you call praying has quietly become the strategy you cannot deliver.

He prayed for his friends
Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.
I am not going to tell you what to say to your sister. I do not know her, or the house, or what would happen. I am not going to tell you to try again and I am not going to tell you to stop. And I am absolutely not going to tell you that she will get out, because I do not know that, and telling somebody that about a person they love is one of the crueler things a page can do.
What I will do is show you a single line at the very end of Job, which is a book people read for the wrong forty chapters.
And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends.Job 42:10
Now. Who are those friends.
Those are the three men who sat with him for a week and then spent the entire middle of the book explaining to him, at length and with great confidence, what he had done to deserve it. They were wrong about everything. God says so directly, two verses earlier.
And what Job does at the end is not confront them, correct them, or win the argument, all of which he had ample material for.
He prays for them.
You are standing where a man stood who had every right to make a case and prayed instead, and Scripture puts the turning right beside the praying. Job 42:10 has the change arrive while he is interceding rather than while he is arguing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a kitchen where a woman prays a plan.
And notice what the verse does not say. It does not say the friends changed. It does not report on them at all. What it reports is what happened to Job while he was doing it.
You are not being told what will happen to her, and the verse deliberately keeps its account on the person doing the praying. It is written that the Lord turned Job's captivity when he prayed for his friends, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps an honest hope from becoming a forecast about somebody else.
A plan is not a prayer
Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.
The plan is not a sin. Rachel's detailed sequence is what love does when it is not allowed to act. It is two years of a woman who cannot speak turning her whole intelligence toward the one thing she is permitted to do, and there is nothing contemptible in it.
You are not being reproached for wanting a way through, and Scripture never once treats a person's desire to help as a failure of trust. Romans 9:3 has Paul saying he could wish himself accursed for the sake of his own people, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a fierce love from being read as interference.
But here is what a plan does when it goes into prayer, and it is worth seeing plainly.
A plan has a shape, and the shape is: this, then this, then this, and then she is out. And what that does, over two years, is quietly make Rachel responsible for a sequence she cannot execute and cannot control and was never given.
She is not praying anymore. She is rehearsing a rescue in God's hearing.
You have never been assigned the getting out of another person, and there is no verse anywhere that puts a door in a sister's hands. Job 42:10 has a man praying for people whose situation he had no authority over at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an undeliverable plan out of somebody's chest.
Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the two years have gone somewhere heavier than helpless, or if the weekly calls have begun to cost more than they give, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. And if you ever believe your sister or her children are in danger, then the ordinary thing to do is call for help where you live rather than manage it alone. That is me refusing to leave you at that table by yourself.
So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than a rescue.
It does not ask you to speak to your sister about any of it. It does not ask you to try again, or to stop calling, or to say anything different on the phone at all. And it does not ask you to give up hope for her.
It asks you to stop praying the plan and start praying the person.
Say her name. And then, instead of the sequence, bless her. Ask for good over her life without specifying the route. Ask that she be kept, that she be loved, that she be met. Do not tell God the order.
You are entitled to hand the sequence back, because Job 42 records a man interceding for people whose outcome he had no say in whatsoever. That is the verse, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a released plan an actual relief rather than a resignation.
You have been standing for her every single day for two years, and not one of those days was wasted because the words were the wrong shape. It is written that the Lord turned his captivity when he prayed for his friends, and His Spirit is the one who takes an ancient intercession into a kitchen on a Saturday.
You are not the door, and it was never in your hands to open, and nothing in Scripture ever put it there. Job 42:10 keeps the outcome entirely on God's side, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that division of labor a rest rather than a defeat.
Whether she comes out, and when, and how, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or promise it. What tonight settles is what you are actually holding.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the kitchen with the light on. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has been at work in that house for two years without any assistance from your sequence. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about your sister, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Words I cannot say to my sister, you are not the only thing I have and you never were. Job 42 says he prayed for his friends, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
- Plan I have been rehearsing in God's hearing, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord turned Job's captivity while he prayed for people whose outcome he had no say in, and the same Spirit who carried that verse carries me, so the sequence was never mine to hold.
- Lord, You turned his captivity when he prayed for his friends, and Job 42:10 is where You put the turning beside the praying and said nothing at all about the friends. I thank You that her door has never once been in my hands, and by Your Spirit I am blessing her out loud tonight instead of planning for her.
