Forward Not Back2 Corinthians 5:17

Nobody Calls Him at Two in the Morning

This message is for a man who used to be the one everybody called in the small hours and now sleeps through the night and hates it, who misses being indispensable more than he misses the work, and who needs that longing met without shame

Nico slept through the night on a Tuesday in March and woke up feeling something he could not identify for about forty minutes.

For nineteen years he was the man you called. He ran crews for a restoration company, the kind that goes out after a flood or a fire, and the work happens when the thing happens, which is to say at two in the morning, in the rain, on somebody's worst night. He had a truck with everything in it. He had four numbers memorized. He had a reputation in three counties, and he had it because for nineteen years he answered every single time.

He does not do that work anymore. The reason is his back and it is not negotiable and every doctor agrees. He does estimates now, from an office, nine to five, for the same company. Same people. Same paycheck, almost.

Nobody calls him at two in the morning.

Here is what he does not say. He is glad about the sleep. He has more of his kids than he has had since the oldest was born. His wife looks about six years younger. All of that is true and he would tell you all of it.

And there is a thing that comes at about eleven at night when the house is down, which is that he checks his phone. Not for anything. He just checks it. And there is nothing on it, and there is never going to be anything on it, and he puts it face down and lies there.

Here is the night it caught.

There was a storm in February. Bad one. Half the county without power, water in basements all over the east side. And Nico lay in bed listening to it and knew, precisely, what was happening out there, and who was calling who, and what they would be loading.

And nobody called him. Which is correct. He cannot lift anything and everybody knows it.

And he lay there in the dark and thought a sentence he has not repeated to anyone: I am not the man they call.

You know that ache. Not for the work. For being the one they needed. And you cannot say it because it sounds like a man who wants his back to be broken again.

Nobody Calls Him at Two in the Morning

Old things passed away, on their own schedule

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you your back will get better. I do not know and it is not mine to say. I am not going to tell you God took the work away for a reason, because I do not know that and inventing a reason for another man's injury is one of the uglier things a person can do with a Bible.

What I will do is read you a verse everybody has on a coffee mug, and read the part nobody notices.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.2 Corinthians 5:17

Old things are passed away. Now, hear what that verse says and what it does not say.

It says the old things have passed. It says that as a settled fact about a person's standing. It does not say the memory of them passes. It does not say the missing of them passes. It does not put a date on when the ache about them stops, and it does not once suggest that a man who still feels the pull of what he was has failed to become new.

You are new as a settled fact rather than as an achievement, and the ache you feel at eleven at night has no authority to contradict it. 2 Corinthians 5:17 states the newness as an accomplished thing about a person in Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a dark bedroom during a storm.

And notice something about how Paul writes it. Behold, all things are become new. Behold is a word you use when somebody is not looking at the thing yet. It is a word for pointing. He is not saying you can see it. He is telling you to look.

You have been made new in a way that is not yet visible from where you are lying, and the verse anticipates exactly that gap. It is written that all things are become new, in the perfect tense, done, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unseen fact something a man can rest his weight on.

Missing being needed is not wanting the injury

Now let me be careful, because this is where somebody gets hurt.

Nico is not asking for his back. He is not romantic about the work. He can tell you exactly what nineteen years of two in the morning did to his marriage and his knees and his temper, and he does not want it back, and if you offered it to him he would say no.

What he misses is a specific thing, and it deserves its own name: he misses being the answer to somebody's emergency.

That is not vanity. It is not adrenaline. It is the plainest kind of usefulness there is, the kind where somebody is in real trouble and you are the person who shows up, and a man who did that for nineteen years and cannot do it anymore has lost something with a real shape.

You are grieving a genuine loss rather than indulging a preference, and Scripture has never once treated usefulness as a vice to be repented of. Galatians 6:2 tells people to bear one another's burdens as an actual instruction, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a real need to be of use from being reclassified as ego.

And here is the second thing, and it is the one that sits underneath the sentence he said in the dark. I am not the man they call. That sentence has a hidden clause in it: therefore I am less.

That clause is not in Scripture anywhere. Not one verse anywhere in either testament measures a man by whether the phone rings.

You were never being priced by how many people needed you at two in the morning, and no verse anywhere assigns worth on that basis. 2 Corinthians 5:16 says we no longer regard anybody after the flesh, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to a man's estimate of himself and not only of other people.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the nights have gone somewhere darker than restless, or if the sentence in the dark has grown into something bigger than a bad thought, do not sit with that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. Chronic pain and a lost trade together are heavy, and both are worth saying plainly to a doctor. That is not me telling you a thing about the job. That is me refusing to leave you in that bedroom by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks of you, and it is smaller than nineteen years.

It does not ask you to find something to be needed for. It does not ask you to volunteer, take on a mentoring thing, or make your peace with the office. It does not ask you to stop checking the phone at eleven, and it does not ask you to feel differently about the storm in February.

It asks you to say out loud what the calls gave you, and then to say one true sentence about the man in the room now.

Not what the work was. What it gave you. Say it plainly and do not put the word selfish anywhere near it.

You are safe to say it in His hearing, because 2 Corinthians 5 declares a man new without requiring him to have finished feeling the old. That is the text, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an honest account of a loss safe rather than shameful.

You have been made new since long before this storm, and no night of lying in the dark has ever altered that by a fraction. It is written that old things are passed away and all things are become new, and His Spirit is the one who takes that settled fact and applies it in a bedroom at two in the morning.

You are not less than the man who used to answer, and there is not a verse anywhere that would let anybody price you that way. 2 Corinthians 5:16 refuses to reckon anybody by the flesh, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that refusal cover a man's own opinion of himself.

What you end up being useful for, and when, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or describe it. What tonight settles is what the ache is and what it is not.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the yard with the house dark behind you. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and the newness was settled before you ever lay awake in that storm. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He makes of you next is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Ache of being replaceable, you are not the truth about what I am and you never were. Second Corinthians 5 says the old has gone and all things are become new, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Clause that says therefore I am less, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that we regard no man after the flesh any longer, and the same Spirit who carried that letter carries me, so a phone that does not ring has no standing to price a man.
  3. Lord, in Christ I am a new creature and old things are passed away, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 is where You settled it rather than promising it. I thank You that the newness did not wait for the missing to finish, and by Your Spirit I am naming this out loud tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
