Forward Not BackIsaiah 43:18

The Gate He Drives Past Slow

This message is for a man who sold the place two years ago for reasons that were right and still slows the truck at that gate every time he passes it, who has not told his wife, and who needs the missing honored rather than corrected

The gate is on the county road about eleven miles from where Wade lives now, and he passes it maybe twice a month, and he slows down every single time.

He sold the place in 2023. Two hundred and forty acres, his father's and his grandfather's, and the arithmetic had been going the wrong way for eleven years and the last three of them were a slow-motion emergency. There were two winters where they ate out of the freezer on purpose. His wife did the books and she did not say anything for a long time, and when she finally did she cried and so did he, and they put it on the market in the spring.

It was the right decision. It was not close.

They live in town now. He works for the co-op and it is a good job with a schedule and insurance and he sleeps eight hours a night for the first time since he was twenty-six.

He has never told anybody that he slows at the gate.

He does not stop. He does not turn in. He takes his foot off the gas about two hundred yards out and looks at whatever there is to look at, which since the new people took over is a new run of fence and a machine shed where the old one was, and then he speeds back up and goes on to wherever he is going.

He could not tell you what he is looking for. He has thought about it. The closest he has got is that he wants to see whether the place looks all right.

Here is the day it caught.

His wife was in the truck. They were coming back from her sister's, and he did it without thinking, the way he always does, and she said, quietly, not unkindly, "You always slow down here."

And Wade said, "Do I?"

And she said, "Every time. For two years."

And neither of them said anything else for about four miles.

You know a gate like that. Something you sold or left or closed, correctly, at real cost, that you go past slow, and you have never explained it because there is nothing to explain and because the explanation would sound like regret and it is not regret.

The Gate He Drives Past Slow

The new thing has not appeared yet

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you the sale was right, because you know it was and you do not need me for that. I am not going to tell you God has a bigger plan for the two hundred and forty acres, because I do not know that and inventing it would be cheap. And I am not going to tell you to stop slowing down.

What I will do is read you two verses in Isaiah that people always quote in the wrong order.

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.Isaiah 43:18-19

Everybody quotes verse nineteen. Behold, I will do a new thing. Very few people slow down on the phrase in the middle of it.

Now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?

That is a question, and it is a question because at the moment God says it the new thing has not appeared. It is springing. It is not sprung. And He asks, essentially: will you recognize it when it comes, given that right now you are standing in a desert looking at nothing.

You are standing in the part of the verse where the new thing has not shown up yet, and Isaiah 43 puts that gap in the text on purpose. Isaiah 43:19 asks whether they will perceive it rather than describing it as already visible, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a truck on a county road.

Now go back to verse eighteen, because that is the one that gets used as a stick. Remember ye not the former things.

Read who He is saying it to. The whole passage before it is God reciting Israel's own history: the sea, the chariots, the way out of Egypt. He has just spent four verses remembering the former things Himself, in detail, out loud. So whatever verse eighteen means, it does not mean the memory is forbidden, because He had just been doing it.

What it means is closer to: do not let what I did before become the only shape you will accept from Me.

You are not under an instruction to have no memory, and the God who said it had just spent four verses remembering out loud. It is written that He recounted the sea and the chariots immediately before saying it, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a verse from being turned into a rule against grief.

Slowing down is not turning in

Now let me be careful here, because this is where it goes wrong.

Wade is not trying to undo it. If somebody offered him the place back tomorrow at the price he sold it for, he would say no, and he would say it fast, and he would be right to. The slowing down has no plan in it.

So what is it? It is a man checking on something he was responsible for. Twenty-two years he got up in the dark for that ground. You do not turn that off with a signature. The habit of caring what happens to it is not a wish to have it back; it is the residue of having been its keeper.

You are not being tempted when you slow down, and there is nothing in Scripture that makes an old loyalty a danger. Isaiah 43:18 sits beside four verses of God's own remembering, and the Holy Spirit is what distinguishes a loyalty from a temptation when a person cannot.

And there is a second thing here that is worth naming, because I think it is the actual weight. Wade cannot say it out loud because saying it would look, to his wife, like the two years in town have not taken. And she cried when they listed it too. He is protecting her from a thing that is not a threat, and the protecting is what has made it lonely.

You have not been keeping a secret so much as sparing somebody, and Scripture is unembarrassed about people carrying grief for a thing they chose. 2 Samuel 12 has David rising and eating after the loss he had already accepted, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a private ache from turning into a private shame.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the two years have gone somewhere heavier than wistful, or if there are days when the town and the job and the eight hours of sleep feel like less than nothing, do not sit with that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your wife, a neighbor, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you a thing about the ground. That is me refusing to leave you in that truck by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is smaller than the ground.

It does not ask you to stop slowing down. It does not ask you to change your route, tell your wife everything, decide anything, or feel differently about 2023. Those may come and they may not, and I am not going to hand you a schedule and call it faith.

It asks you to say out loud what you slow down for.

Not to your wife, unless you want to. Out loud, in the truck, alone, to God. What the looking is at, and why. Plainly, with no defense on either end of it.

Then one true sentence about the road you are actually on. Not a hopeful one. A true one.

You are entirely safe to say it in His hearing, because Isaiah 43 has God remembering His own former things out loud four verses before He tells anybody about the new one. That is the passage, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an honest look backward safe rather than disloyal.

You have been on a road that is being made the whole time you have been slowing down at that gate, and the making does not wait for the looking to stop. It is written that He makes a way in the wilderness, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient promise and lays it over a county road.

You are not standing still because you have not seen it yet, and Isaiah puts the not-seeing right there in the verse. Isaiah 43:19 asks whether it will be perceived rather than assuming it is obvious, and the Holy Spirit is what makes the gap between a promise and its appearing survivable.

What the new thing turns out to be, and when it shows, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or describe it. What tonight settles is that slowing down is not turning in.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the truck in your own driveway. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has been making a road since 2023 whether or not anybody could see it. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What the new thing is, and when it appears, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Habit of slowing at that gate, you are not a wish to undo it and you never were. Isaiah 43 says He makes a way in the wilderness, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Fear that this looks like regret, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God recited the sea and the chariots out loud four verses before He said remember not the former things, and the same Spirit who carried that passage carries me.
  3. Lord, You make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, and Isaiah 43:19 is where You asked whether it would be perceived rather than pretending it was already plain. I thank You that the road has been getting made while I could not see one foot of it, and by Your Spirit I am saying it out loud tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
