Forward Not BackHebrews 11:16

The Hymn Behind Me in the Line

This message is for the bread stall line on a Saturday when a stranger hums the old song and the reader misses the table of twenty they left, and has told nobody

The bread stall is six deep and the loaves are still warm enough to fog the paper, and she is standing in the line with her purse open when the man behind her starts to hum.

She knows it before the second bar. It is one of theirs. One of the songs from the old place, the one they sang in four parts on a Friday night with the windows steamed up and twenty people round one long table, and nobody in the whole city sang like they sang. She has not heard it in two years. Her whole body turns toward it before her mind can stop it, the way a plant turns to a window.

And here is the thing she has never told her new friends, the kind ones, the ones who helped her carry her boxes out and sat with her the first hard month and told her how brave she was. She misses it. Not the rules. Not the way every decision was made for her, not the way the leaders read her post, not the fear. But the table. The harmonies. Walking into a room where every single person knew her name and what she took in her tea. She has been out for two years and she is standing in a bread line on a Saturday about to cry over a stranger's humming, and she cannot say that to anybody, because they would look at her the way you look at somebody who is about to go back.

She is not going back. She knows that the way she knows her own hands. But she misses it, and the missing has nowhere to go, so it lives in her chest and comes out at bread stalls.

You know that line. You have your own song, your own table, your own thing from the old life that was genuinely good and that you are not allowed to say you miss, because you are supposed to be nothing but relieved. This is your Saturday. Stay in the line a minute.

The Hymn Behind Me in the Line

God wrote your longing into the story of faith

Hear me, daughter, son, whoever is holding this in a bread line. I am not going to tell you the missing is wrong. I am going to show you where God put it, because He did not hide it, and He did not shame it, and He wrote it into the chapter we call the hall of faith.

If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.Hebrews 11:15-16

Look at what the writer admits, in the same breath as he honors Abraham and Sarah and the whole company. They would have had opportunity to return. The road back was open. It was always open. Nobody in that chapter is praised for having no way back. They are praised for walking forward with the way back still open behind them, and with the old land still in their memory, and with God, look at it, not ashamed of them.

You are one of that company, right now, with your song still in your ears. That is not my kindness talking. It is written, in a chapter about the heroes of faith, that people who had left a real place with real things they remembered kept walking, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that chapter is the same Spirit inside you in the line. He is not ashamed to be called your God while you miss the table. He was not ashamed of theirs.

You were never required to have no way back in order to count as somebody walking forward, and Hebrews 11 says so out loud. Hebrews 11:15 volunteers that the road home stood open the whole time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an open door behind a person something other than an accusation.

Now let me name the pit, because you deserve to be seen in it before I lift you out of it. The ache is not really about the singing. It is this: if I miss it, maybe I never really left. Maybe the missing is proof that something in me still belongs there, and if the kind people knew, they would stop trusting me. So you have made the longing a secret, and a secret longing grows teeth. That is the whole weight, and I am not going to pretend it is smaller than it is.

Missing it is not the same as belonging in it

Come with me to the road out of Egypt for a moment, because God did something there that most people read straight past.

When He brought the people out, He did not take them by the short road along the coast, though it was near. Scripture says why: God said, lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt. He routed the road around the pull back before they had taken a single step. He knew the longing was coming. He built the map with it in mind. He was not surprised by it and He was not angry at it. He accounted for it, the way a mother packs the coat she knows the child will say they do not need.

You have a God who planned for your homesickness, and He planned for it before you left. His word records it in Exodus 13, and His Spirit is the one who led them by the long road, and He is leading you by yours. The pull is not evidence against you. It is the thing He drew the map around.

Now watch what the people in the desert actually said, because it is nearly word for word what you said in the line. We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. Do you hear it? Not the bricks. Not the whips. The onions. The taste of a thing at a table. God's own people, walking out under a pillar of fire, homesick for a vegetable. And they were still walking. They were still out. Their feet were in the wilderness and their mouths were in Egypt, and God did not turn them round for it.

Here is where I raise my voice, because somewhere along the way you picked up the idea that the longing and the leaving cannot live in the same body. They can. They do. You are out, and you miss it, and both of those are true at once, and neither one cancels the other. The written word holds both together in Hebrews and in Numbers, and the Spirit who wrote them down is not confused about you. Missing a table does not put you back at it. Missing a song does not make you sing it. Your feet know where they are.

There is something else the kind people did not tell you, because they did not know it. Some of what you miss was actually good. Twenty people at one table is good. Four part harmony is good. Being known is good. God did not make those things wrong when He brought you out of that place; He brought you out of the place, not out of the goodness, and the goodness is going with you, because it was His to begin with. What you miss is very often the fingerprint of God on the old life, and you are allowed to grieve the loss of His fingerprint without wanting the wall it was on.

And one thing said here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the two years have gone somewhere heavier than homesick, or if the secret has grown into something that sits on you all week, do not carry it alone. Tell one of the kind ones this week, or your doctor, or a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you anything about the place you left. That is me refusing to leave you standing in that market on your own.

The breakthrough

So here is what I want to happen in the line, before the man behind you finishes his hymn.

I want you to stop hiding it. Not to act on it, not to go back, not to ring anybody. Just to stop hiding it, first from God, who already read it, and then from yourself. You have permission from the word of God to miss what you left, because the word of God is where the permission is written. The people in the hall of faith remembered their country. The people under the pillar remembered their onions. And the Holy Spirit did not strike a single line of that out of the record. He kept it in, so you would find yourself in it on a Saturday.

And then I want you to hear the second half of the verse, because it is the half that turns you round to face forward. They desire a better country. Not a country with no memories behind it. A better one. What you are walking toward is not the absence of what you left; it is the presence of something He prepared. You have a city ahead of you with your name on the door, and God is not ashamed to be called your God on the road to it. That is written. That is His Spirit's own testimony over you. The song behind you is allowed to be beautiful. It is still behind you.

Declare this over yourself

Say it with your mouth, in the line if you dare or on the walk home if you do not. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the ground under these words is Scripture, not your own nerve, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, not the strength of your voice. Whatever He does with the ache in your chest, and however slowly it eases, that is His to decide, and I am not putting a date on it. What I am doing is handing you the two sentences. Speak to the song, then to the fear, then to Him.

  1. Old song in the line, you are allowed to be beautiful and I am still not turning round, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Hebrews 11:16 says God is not ashamed to be called my God while I miss the table, and I am walking with the way back still open behind me.
  2. Fear that missing it means I belong there, you have no ground here. It is written in Exodus 13:17 that God drew the map around this homesickness before anybody took a step, and His Spirit is the one carrying me down the long road and not my own nerve.
  3. Lord, You brought me out and You are ahead of me, and Hebrews 11:16 says You have prepared a city for people who had not arrived yet. I thank You that what You have prepared is a better country and not an empty one, and by Your Spirit I am buying my bread and walking toward it.
