She Misses Being Needed

This message is for a woman who came out of an arrangement where she was needed at every hour and now misses being the one everybody called, who suspects that is a shameful thing to miss, and who needs it told the truth about instead

Karen answered her phone eleven times on a Sunday in 2019 and she can still tell you what most of the calls were about.

She ran the family side of a business her husband's family had built, and what that meant in practice was that she was the switchboard for about forty people. Staff problems. His mother. His brother's marriage. The schedule. The money. If something went wrong anywhere in that family or that company between 2004 and 2022, Karen's phone rang.

It ended in a way that was not her choice and was also, everyone now agrees, the best thing that ever happened to her. She is out. There was a settlement. She has a small apartment near her daughter and a part-time job at a garden center that she genuinely likes.

Her phone rings about twice a week.

Here is what she has not said out loud to one single person.

She misses it. Not the family. Not the arrangement, which she can describe with total clarity and no nostalgia whatsoever. She misses being the one who could hold it. She misses the specific feeling of a hard problem landing on her desk at four in the afternoon and being solved by six. She misses walking into a room and having four people turn toward her because she was the one who would know.

At the garden center she is very good at plants and nobody needs her at all.

Here is the moment it caught.

Her daughter said, over dinner, kindly, "Isn't it nice to not have your phone going all the time?"

And Karen said, "It's heaven."

And then she went home and sat in her own quiet apartment and thought about the sentence she had just said, which was a lie, and which she has now told about nine people.

You know that ache. Not for the thing you came out of. For the version of you that existed inside it, the one who was needed, and the fact that missing that sounds like vanity when you try to say it out loud.

She Misses Being Needed

What forgetting actually means

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you to go back to that family or take on something to fill the hours. I am not going to tell you what the next thing is, because I do not know. And I am not going to preach at you about identity being found in Christ and not in your usefulness, not because that is untrue, but because said at the wrong moment it functions as a way of telling somebody their loss was not a real loss.

What I will do is slow down on a verse everybody quotes and almost nobody reads carefully.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.Philippians 3:13

Now. Notice what Paul does in the middle of a sentence about forgetting. He mentions what is behind.

And it is worse than that, or better. Read the verses immediately before it. He has just spent a paragraph listing, in detail, what is behind him: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews, a Pharisee, blameless as touching the law. That is a man who remembers every line of his own résumé perfectly, and he is writing it out on purpose.

So whatever forgetting means here, it does not mean the memory is gone.

The Greek is closer to not reckoning with, the way you stop keeping an account. He has not deleted it. He has stopped scoring himself by it.

You are not required to lose the memory in order to stop being ruled by it, and Philippians 3 has a man doing both in the same sentence. Philippians 3:13 puts the naming and the forgetting side by side, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a quiet apartment on a Sunday.

And then the second half of the verse. Reaching forth. The word is a picture of a runner leaning, with the body ahead of the feet. It is a posture, not an achievement. Nobody in that image has arrived anywhere.

You have been reaching the whole time you have been aching, and the two happen in the same body without contradiction. It is written that he reaches forth while still counting himself not to have apprehended, and the Holy Spirit is what holds those together in a person.

Missing being needed is not vanity

Now let me be careful, because this is exactly where somebody gets hurt.

Karen's ache is not pride. I want to say that plainly, because she has half-decided it is, and that half-decision is why she has told nine people it is heaven.

Being needed is not the same as being admired. What she misses is not applause. It is contribution, and competence, and the particular dignity of being the person who can carry something heavy. Those are not vices. Scripture is full of people whose usefulness mattered to them and to God, and the New Testament does not once tell anybody that wanting to be useful is a spiritual problem.

You are not being reproved for wanting to carry something, and there is no verse anywhere that makes usefulness a temptation. 1 Corinthians 12 has God arranging members in a body precisely so that each one has something to do, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a real need to contribute from being reclassified as ego.

And here is the second thing, and it is the sharper one. What Karen actually lost was not the job. It was the version of herself that the job made visible. She knows she is capable. Nobody in her new life has seen it. And a person can go a very long time being quietly excellent in a room where nobody has any reason to notice.

You have not stopped being what you are because the room has changed, and God's estimate of a person was never taken from a job title. Ephesians 2:10 calls a person His workmanship before naming a single work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that order straight when a phone stops ringing.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the quiet apartment has gone somewhere darker than empty, or if the lie you keep telling people has started to cost more than it saves, do not sit with that alone. Tell somebody this week. Your daughter, a friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you a thing about that family or that business. That is me refusing to leave you in that apartment by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks of you, and it is small.

It does not ask you to find a new role. It does not ask you to volunteer for something, take on a project, or stop liking the garden center. And it does not ask you to feel differently about the phone.

It asks you to stop telling people it is heaven.

Not to everybody. To one person, or to God, which is the safer place to start. Say what being needed actually gave you, in plain words, without calling it vanity in the same breath.

You are entirely safe to say it in His hearing, because Philippians 3 has a man laying out everything he was before he says one word about pressing on. That is the passage, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an honest inventory safe rather than proud.

You have been reaching forward through the whole of this, including the evenings you sat in the quiet and did not know what to call it. It is written that he reaches forth unto the things which are before, and His Spirit is the one who takes that posture and puts it in a person who feels like they are standing still.

You are not disqualified from being needed again, and nothing that happened in 2022 removed one thing you are actually made of. Ephesians 2:10 puts the workmanship before the works, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that order a rest rather than a consolation.

What comes next, and when, and who ends up needing you, is His and I will not date it, forecast it or describe it. What tonight settles is that the ache is allowed to be named.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the apartment with the light on. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He has been ahead of you since 2022. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about what comes next is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Ache of not being needed, you are not vanity in me and you never were. Philippians 3 says I reach forth unto the things which are before, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now.
  2. Sentence I keep telling people, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that Paul listed everything he had been in detail and then spoke of forgetting it, so remembering plainly is not pride, and the same Spirit who carried that letter carries me.
  3. Lord, I reach forth unto the things which are before, and Philippians 3:13 is where a man did that while still counting himself not to have arrived. I thank You that reaching and aching happen in the same body without contradiction, and by Your Spirit I am naming this out loud tonight.
