Rosa set it up on a Tuesday in 2015, standing in the branch, because her brother had missed two months and the letters had started coming to their mother's house and their mother had cried at the kitchen table. The teller asked how much and Rosa said the number. The teller asked how long and Rosa said, just for a while.
It goes out on the third of the month. It has gone out on the third of the month one hundred and thirty-two times.
Rosa is forty-four. She works in medical records at the county hospital and she is good at it, and she has not had a raise that outran her rent since the year she set the transfer up. She has a car with a hundred and ninety thousand miles on it. She has a savings account that has been opened and emptied four separate times. When the roof went in the spring she paid for it over eighteen months on a card, and she never once thought, seriously and out loud, about the third of the month.
Because it is not a payment. That is the thing. It has never been a payment. It is what you do. Her brother has three kids and a back that ended his working life at thirty-eight and a wife who does what she can, and Rosa is single, and Rosa has always been the one who could, and there is a whole grammar in her family for this. We look after each other. Family is family. She's the strong one. Nobody in that family has ever said the word support out loud, and nobody has ever said thank you either, and both of those facts are the same fact.
Here is the day it snagged. Not a fight. Not a crisis.
Her niece, who is nineteen and does not know the history, was helping Rosa move a bookcase and saw the bank app open on the counter. Not nosy, just there. She said, "Auntie, what's the third-of-the-month thing?"
And Rosa said, "Oh, that's nothing."
And her niece said, "It's not nothing, it's like a car payment."
Rosa laughed and changed the subject, and later that night, sitting on the edge of the bed with her shoes still on, she did the arithmetic she had spent eleven years not doing. She did it twice, because the first answer seemed like a mistake.
You have an arrangement like that. Something that has a place in the week and no name in the language, that everybody around you has a warm word for, and that has quietly become the shape of your whole life. It is not a scandal. It is not a betrayal. It is a cost that nobody, including you, ever wrote down.

The word He uses at the bush
Let me tell you what I am not doing here, because if I do not say it now you will read the rest of this braced.
I am not going to tell you what your arrangement is. I cannot see it. I do not know whether the person on the other end of it is grateful or oblivious or in real trouble, and I am not going to hand you a verdict on anybody. I am not going to tell you to stop, and I am not going to tell you to keep going. That is not what this stage of the road is for and I would be lying if I pretended I could see your circumstances from here.
What I am going to do is put you in front of one line at the burning bush, because there is a word in it that nobody preaches.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.Exodus 3:7
Seen. Heard. And then the third one. I know their sorrows.
Sorrows is not the same word as affliction. Affliction is the public thing, the bricks, the quotas, the visible arrangement anybody walking past could have described. Sorrows is what it cost inside the people who lived it. Nobody in Egypt itemized that. There was no ledger anywhere in that country recording what four hundred years took out of a particular woman on a particular street. And God, opening His mouth for the first time in four centuries, says: I know it.
You are known in the exact place the arrangement has been most expensive, and no one had to write it down first for God to have the figure. That is Exodus 3:7, not my sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying a word spoken at a bush in Midian into a bedroom where somebody is sitting with their shoes still on.
Notice what that verse does not do. It does not accuse the Egyptians and it does not lecture the Hebrews. It does not tell anybody in Egypt that they should have counted sooner. It just says: I know. The knowing is God's own initiative and it landed before Israel had asked for it in any organized way.
You were never overlooked in the years nobody thanked you, and the record He keeps is not the one your family keeps. Exodus 3:7 has Him doing the knowing without a request, and His Spirit is the one who makes a three-thousand-year-old sentence a present-tense fact in your kitchen.
What families call it, and what He calls it
Now, I want to be careful here, because this is the exact place a message like this goes wrong.
Loving your family is not the problem. Carrying somebody who genuinely cannot carry themselves is not a fault, it is closer to the heart of God than most things people do. The verse is not telling you that generosity was a mistake. Nothing in this article is telling you that.
You are free to love somebody and still tell the truth about the weight, because those two have never once been in competition in Scripture. Exodus 3:7 has God naming the affliction of a people He is about to rescue rather than reproach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps those two things from collapsing into each other.
What the verse is doing is refusing a particular sentence. The sentence is: this is just what happens, and there is no cost in it worth naming. Egypt ran on that sentence. Everybody in it, on both sides, had learned to say some version of it. And the first thing God says at the bush is that He does not accept it, and that He has been keeping a count nobody else kept.
You have not been asked to justify the cost before it is allowed to be real, because the God who names it does not require a witness. It is written that He knew their sorrows, and the same Spirit who inspired that clause is not going to make you argue your case before He acknowledges it.
And I want to say one thing here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed than stay quiet and be needed. If any part of what you are inside has stopped being sacrifice and started being unsafe, or if the arithmetic tonight has taken you somewhere dark, that is not a thing to sit with alone. Tell somebody before you sleep. A friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you what to do about your family. That is me refusing to leave you unaccompanied in the room.
So here is what this stage asks of you, and it is smaller than you fear.
It does not ask you to cancel anything. It does not ask you to make a phone call, hold a conversation, produce a boundary or announce a change. Those may or may not belong on some future page and I cannot see your circumstances well enough to say. They are not on tonight's page.
It asks you to stop being the only person in the room who will not count it.
Not to your brother. Not to your mother. To God, who already has the number and has had it the whole time.
You are safe to say the true figure in front of Him, because He said it first and He said it about a whole nation before one of them found the words. Exodus 3:7 is where that happened, and His Spirit is what turns a verse read on a Tuesday into ground you can actually stand on.
You have been carried through the part you assumed you had to earn, which is being taken seriously. The knowing at the bush comes before Moses agrees, before Pharaoh hears a word, before a single Hebrew changes anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that order matter tonight.
What God then does about your arrangement is His, and I will not date it, predict it, or describe it. I do not know. I know what the verse settles, and what the verse settles is that the count exists and He is holding it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud. Not because the saying moves anything. The moving is His and He moved first, at a bush, before anybody asked. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture puts a mouth in His people to agree with what He has already said, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does with your arrangement after that is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I am placing no timetable on Him.
- Word family, you are not the reason this has no name and you never had that authority over me. Exodus 3:7 says God knows the sorrows nobody counted, and the Holy Spirit is pressing that on me tonight. I am not calling this ordinary anymore.
- Fear of looking like a complainer, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God named the affliction of a whole nation without accusing one person in it, and the same Spirit who carried that word carries mine, so counting the cost is not the same as bringing a charge.
- Lord, You know the sorrows, and Exodus 3:7 is where You said so before I ever set up a transfer. I thank You that the figure was in Your hand eleven years before it was in my mouth, and by Your Spirit I am done pretending it is nothing.
