The Table He Did Not Set

The Bergmans have had him for dinner every Friday since March and Ari has not once let anybody serve him first.

He carries things. He clears. He is up before the plates are down, he is at the sink before anybody has finished, and last week he arrived with a new chair for the corner because he had noticed one was wobbling.

Ruth Bergman, who is seventy-one and does not miss anything, said to her husband afterward, "He has not sat down in that house since March."

Ari left his father's business in February. Seventeen years. How it ended is not this article's business except to say that it ended, and that most of the people he had eaten with every Friday of his adult life are on the other side of it.

The Bergmans are not family. They are a couple from the synagogue who asked him once, in March, when it was very obvious he had nowhere to be, and then kept asking.

He has been thirty-one Fridays and he has never sat down.

Here is the evening it caught.

He got up to clear and Ruth put her hand flat on the table, not hard, and said, "Ari. Sit."

And he said, "I am fine, I can do it."

And she said, "I did not ask if you were fine. I asked you to sit."

And he sat, and it was, without exaggeration, one of the hardest things he had done that year.

You know that. Somebody has offered you something you did not build and cannot repay, and you have been finding jobs to do around the edge of it for months, and somebody has finally said your name.

Somebody else prepared it

Let me put down what I am not doing tonight, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to give you a verdict on your father or that business or the people on the other side of February. I am not going to tell you what to do about any of it, and I am not going to tell you what comes next.

What I will do is read you the middle of the most familiar psalm in the world and point at the verb.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Psalm 23:5

Thou preparest.

The table is not built by the person eating at it. It is prepared, by somebody else, and the guest arrives to something already laid.

And there is not one thing in that verse for the guest to do. He does not cook, he does not carry, he does not clear. He is anointed and his cup is filled, both of them by the same hand, and the psalm does not record him contributing anything at all.

You are standing beside a table that somebody else prepared, and the psalm assigns you no part in the preparing whatsoever. Psalm 23:5 has every verb in it done by God and every one of them done to the guest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a dining room on a Friday.

And notice where the table is. In the presence of mine enemies. That phrase is usually read as triumph, and it can be, but read it plainly first: the table is set in a difficult location, in full view of everything that is still unresolved.

He does not wait for the room to be clear.

You have been provided for in the middle of an unfinished situation rather than after it, and the verse puts the table in the harder place on purpose. It is written that He prepares the table in the presence of enemies, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient provision a present one while everything else is still going on.

Standing is not humility

Now let me be careful here, because this is where somebody gets hurt.

Ari's clearing and carrying is not pride. It looks like the opposite of pride and it is genuinely meant, and he is a good man who has spent his whole life being useful to people, and the Bergmans are getting a new chair out of it.

I am not going to tell him he is being arrogant. That would be untrue and unkind.

You are not being accused of pride, and Scripture never once treats a willingness to serve as a fault. Galatians 5:13 tells people to serve one another by love as a plain instruction, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a real virtue from being reclassified as a problem.

But here is what is going on underneath, and Ruth saw it in about the fourth week.

For seventeen years, in that business, Ari was fed and included and provided for, and every bit of it was conditional on what he produced. Nobody in that family ever said so out loud. It did not need saying. It was the water.

And a man who spent seventeen years earning his seat does not know how to occupy one he has not earned. So he earns it. Thirty-one Fridays of earning a seat that was given.

That is not humility. It is a bill being paid to somebody who never sent one.

You have not been invoiced by these people, and there is nothing in the arrangement for you to settle. Psalm 23:5 records a guest who contributes nothing and is not once described as indebted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells the difference between serving and paying.

Say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the months since February have gone somewhere heavier than displaced, or if the Fridays are the only thing holding a week together, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody this week. That is me refusing to leave you standing at that sink by yourself.
