Your Cry HeardPsalm 34:6

The Fence Post He Prays At

This message is for a man who has prayed at the same corner post at the end of the same field for nine seasons about the same trouble, who has begun to feel like a fool out there, and who needs to know the poor man cried and the Lord heard him

There is a corner post at the far end of the hayfield where the wire turns and goes down toward the creek, and Wendell has prayed at that post for nine seasons.

Not on purpose at first. It is just where he ends up when he walks the fence, and the first year he did it he was so worried he was talking out loud before he knew it. Now it is a fixed thing. Most evenings, before dark, out to the post, hand on the top of it, and he says the same thing he has been saying since 2016.

The trouble is a piece of ground and a loan and a brother-in-law and a signature from a long time ago, and it does not matter for this article what the details are, because the details are not the point. What matters is that it has not moved in nine years and that every season it costs a little more.

Wendell is sixty-two. He is not a talker. He has never once mentioned that post to his wife, though she knows, the way a wife knows. He has not asked a church to pray. He would not know how to start.

Here is the evening it caught.

His grandson, eleven, came out with him, which he does sometimes, and they walked the fence, and at the post Wendell stopped the way he always does, and the boy stopped too and waited, and then said, "Are we praying?"

And Wendell said, "I am."

And the boy said, "About the ground?"

And Wendell said, "Yep."

And the boy said, "Does it work?"

Wendell has thought about that question every day since. Not because it was cruel. Because it was the exact question he has been refusing to ask in his own head for nine years, and it turns out an eleven-year-old will just say it.

You have a spot like that. A place you go, a time of day, a thing you say. And somewhere in the years you started to feel a little foolish standing there, and you have never said that to anybody either.

The Fence Post He Prays At

The verse picks the smallest man in it

Let me set down what I am not doing, so you can quit bracing.

I am not going to tell you whether your thing is going to turn. I do not know. I am not going to tell you what God is doing in the nine years, because I do not know that either, and I am not going to fill the silence with a guess said in a preaching voice. I am not going to tell you what to do about the ground or the loan or the brother-in-law.

What I will do is read you six words out of Psalm 34 that most people skate over.

This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.Psalm 34:6

This poor man. Not the righteous, though the psalm says that elsewhere. Not the faithful. Not the one who prayed without ceasing. The poor man. The word covers everything from actual poverty to the man with no leverage, no standing, nobody to speak for him.

David wrote that psalm about the time he pretended to be insane in front of a foreign king to save his own skin. That is the setting. It is not a triumph. It is the least impressive moment of his life, and out of it he writes the line about the poor man crying and being heard.

You are the person that verse is about, and it picked the least impressive man available on purpose. Psalm 34:6 names the poor man rather than the strong one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and out to a fence post at the end of a field.

And look at the verb it uses for the man. Cried. Not petitioned. Not interceded. Not stood in faith. Cried, which is what a man does at a post at dusk when he has run out of everything else and is talking to a wire fence in the dark.

You have never once needed a better word than the one you actually use out there, because the psalm chose the plainest verb it had. It is written that the poor man cried and the Lord heard him, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient plainness a present permission.

Foolish is a feeling, not a verdict

Now let me be careful, because a message like this goes wrong if it gets clumsy.

The foolishness Wendell feels is not a spiritual failure and it is not a lack of faith. It is what happens to any human being who does the same thing for nine years without visible result. A man who paints a fence and it stays painted gets a feeling of competence. A man who prays about a piece of ground for nine seasons gets no such signal, and after long enough the absence of the signal starts to talk.

That is not doubt. That is a nervous system doing exactly what nervous systems do.

You are not being graded on the confidence you feel while you pray, and there is not one verse anywhere that makes the feeling part of the transaction. Psalm 34 was written by a man who had just faked madness out of fear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a feeling from being mistaken for a verdict.

And here is the other thing the boy's question can do to a man if nobody helps him with it. Does it work? is the wrong shape of question, not because it is impertinent, but because it turns prayer into a mechanism with an output, and then makes the man at the post the operator who is presumably operating it wrong.

That is not what is happening out there. What is happening out there is a man talking to a person.

You are not running a machine at that post, and Scripture never once frames prayer as an operation you could be performing incorrectly. Psalm 34:6 has a hearing and a person, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a relationship from being read as a technique.

Say this here rather than later, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If nine years of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, or if a bad evening at that post has gone somewhere you would not want to say out loud, do not carry that alone. Tell somebody tonight. Your wife, your neighbor, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me telling you what to do about the ground. That is me refusing to leave you out there in the dark by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks, and it is a good deal smaller than nine years.

It does not ask you to stop going to the post. It does not ask you to go more often either. It does not ask you to have a plan about the ground, or call anybody, or produce a certainty that has never once been out there. Those are not on tonight's page and I cannot see enough of your life to put them there.

It asks you to answer the boy's question out loud, in front of God, honestly.

Not with a defense of prayer. Not with an argument. Just: I have been coming out here nine years, and I do not know, and I am still coming.

You are entirely safe to say that to Him, because Psalm 34 was written out of a moment that had nothing impressive in it at all. That is the setting of the psalm, and the Holy Spirit is what makes honest ground safer than confident ground.

You have been heard at that post every evening for nine seasons, and not one of those hearings depended on how sure you sounded. It is written that the poor man cried and the Lord heard him, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ancient sentence out to a corner post in the dark.

You are not out there running something that could be done wrong, and that removes the only real weight you have been carrying to the fence. Psalm 34:6 has no technique in it anywhere, and the Holy Spirit is what makes the absence of technique a relief rather than a worry.

Whether the ground turns, and when, and how it turns out, is His and I will not date it, forecast it, or describe it. What tonight settles is that the crying has been heard.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, hand on the top of the post, or sitting in the truck with the door open. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He heard the first evening. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about the ground, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Feeling like a fool out here, you are not a measurement of anything and you never were. Psalm 34 says this poor man cried and the Lord heard him, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now. I am not walking back to the house on account of you.
  2. Question of whether it works, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that a man cried and the Lord heard him, with no machine and no method anywhere in the verse, and the same Spirit who carried that psalm carries me, so there is nothing out here I could be doing wrong.
  3. Lord, this poor man cried and You heard him, and Psalm 34:6 is where You had it written down about the least impressive day of David's life. I thank You that You picked the poor man on purpose, and by Your Spirit I am saying it out loud at this post again tonight.
