The Sentence She Says at the Bus Stop

The handover takes eleven minutes if nobody has fallen in the night, and nobody has, so at ten past seven she is out of the side door with her coat half on and her lanyard still round her neck, walking the four hundred yards to the stop with the same three people she walks it with every morning. Dev from the kitchen. The agency girl whose name she keeps forgetting. Marta, who has done nights here longer than she has and never once complained about it out loud, which is a thing you can hold against a person or admire, depending on how tired you are.

She has done six years of nights at the home. Not because she chose them, exactly. Nights paid the extra that covered her mother's care, and then her mother's care needed more, and then the flat came up that was close enough to walk, and somewhere in there the arrangement stopped being an arrangement and became simply her life. Days asleep with the curtains taped shut. Evenings with her mother. Nights on the corridor with the call bells. She could not tell you the last time she was awake on a Saturday afternoon.

At the bus stop she does the thing she does. The others are on their phones. She looks at the timetable she knows by heart, and under her breath, so quietly it is mostly breath, she says the sentence. It is one sentence and it has not changed in six years. Lord, get me out of this. She used to say it with force. Then she said it with tears, in the second year, when the extra shifts started. Now she says it the way you touch a doorframe on the way through: a habit with a memory of meaning in it. She does not expect anything. She has asked about this for years and nothing has moved, and she has made her peace with the asking being the whole of it.

You have a sentence like that. It might not be about shift work and it might not be six years, but you know the feeling of a request that has worn smooth in your mouth, and the particular tiredness of asking without expecting, and the small, quiet, never-said conclusion underneath it: He is not listening, or He is listening and it makes no difference. I am not going to argue with your tiredness. I am going to read you something about your sentence.

Four verbs and a brick yard

Let me put the weight on the table before I lift anything. It is not that you doubt God exists. It is that the years have taught you a quiet lesson about the space between your mouth and heaven, and the lesson is that the space is empty. You said the thing. Nothing moved. You said it again. Nothing moved. And a person can only do that so many times before the silence starts to sound like an answer, and the answer sounds like no, or worse, like nobody is there.

Now read this with me. It is the oldest cry in the book, and it comes from people who had been in an arrangement so long it had stopped being one.

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel, and God knew.Exodus 2:23-25

I am a teacher and I count things, so count with me. Four verbs, and God is the subject of all four. He heard. He remembered. He saw. He knew. The Hebrew for that last one is the word for the closest kind of knowing there is, the knowing of a person, not the knowing of a fact. That is what the text says happened to a cry that went up from a brick yard.

Now notice what is not among the four verbs. Changed is not there. Freed is not there. Nothing about the bricks. The morning after that cry went up, the people of Israel got up and made bricks. And when Moses finally arrived at the palace, Exodus 5 says the quota stayed the same and the straw was taken away, so that for a stretch the answer to their prayer looked, from the inside, exactly like their prayer making things worse. Moses himself went back to God and said as much: you have not delivered your people at all.

You were heard on the first morning, and the silence since has not been absence. I am not saying that from my own hope. I am reading you the written order of events: the cry, then the four verbs, then a long stretch of bricks. And the One who carries a written thing into a person is the Holy Spirit, who Paul says searches the deep things of God and knows what has been received (1 Corinthians 2:10). Your sentence went up. It was received on the way up. That is a settled fact about your sentence, and it was settled before anything moved.

Heard is not the same as answered, and it is not less

I want to be exact here, because I have watched people get hurt at this precise point. This is not the article that tells you the change is coming. I have no idea when your arrangement moves. This site never predicts a deliverance and I never will. Exodus itself would not let me: heard in chapter two, out in chapter twelve, and a great many bricks in between. If anybody, including me, tells you the date, they are speaking beyond the text.

But hear what I am saying, because it is smaller than a forecast and it is stronger. Heard is its own thing. It is not the waiting room for answered. When God says in Exodus 3, I have surely seen the affliction of my people, and have heard their cry, and I know their sorrows, and I am come down, the coming down is announced to Moses at a bush, and the people in the brick yard know nothing about it yet. They are still making bricks. And they have already been heard, remembered, seen and known, and He has already come down. Every one of those things is true of a person who can see none of them.

You have been remembered, and remembered is not the same as being got round to. In Scripture when God remembers, He acts on a covenant He already made; it is never that He forgot and then recalled. And it is His Spirit, not the strength of your asking, that has been carrying that sentence for six years, so the sentence was never held up by how tired you said it. I say this because I know you have been grading your own prayers, and I want you to stop. The brick yard cry in Exodus 2 is not described as strong or well worded. It is described as a groan.

Something else the text does that I want you to see. Daniel prayed for three weeks with no visible reply, and when the reply came it opened with this: from the first day that you set your heart to understand, your words were heard, and I have come because of your words (Daniel 10:12). Heard on day one. Arrived on day twenty-one. He was not less heard on day ten because nothing had come. Neither are you.

One honest sentence before we go on, because this site owes it to you: if the arrangement has stopped being hard and become one where somebody is not safe, or if six years of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, this article cannot see your kitchen and does not pretend to. Tell one real person today. A friend, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not instead of prayer. That is the shape prayer sometimes takes.

You have not been left to carry the weight of the years by yourself, and Scripture puts real people beside a person as ordinary provision rather than as a fallback. Exodus 4:14 has God sending Aaron toward Moses before Moses ever asked for company, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes human help a gift rather than an admission.

You are known, in the arrangement, by the God who counted the bricks. That is Exodus 2:25 in one line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line from a page true in a staff room at seven in the morning. Known is present tense. It does not wait for the bus.
