Your Cry Heard2 Kings 20:5

The Phone He Keeps Charged

This message is for a father who has kept the same number for eleven years and charges the phone every night in case his daughter calls, who has prayed about it so long the prayer has gone quiet, and who needs to hear that God has seen the tears as well as heard the words

Hector has had the same number since 2009 because his daughter has that number.

She has not used it since March of 2014. He knows the month. He does not talk about the month.

There was a fight, and then there was a worse fight, and then there was a year of nothing, and then there was one text on a Christmas Day that said I'm ok, don't worry and no reply to the eleven he sent back. She is thirty-three now. She is alive, he knows that much through a cousin. She lives in another state. That is the whole of the information he has and he has had it for four years.

Every night he plugs the phone in on the kitchen counter. Every night. He has been through five phones and kept the number through every one of them, and he pays for a plan he does not need because switching might mean a hold in service, and a hold in service might be the night.

Here is what has happened to his praying.

In 2014 he prayed for hours. He prayed like a man arguing. In 2016 he was still praying every day, shorter. By 2019 it had become a sentence. Now, in 2025, when he plugs the phone in at night, what he does is set it down on the counter and put his hand flat on it for a second and not say anything at all.

That is the prayer. That is all that is left of it.

He would tell you, if you asked, that he does not really pray about it anymore. He would be wrong, and he would not know he was wrong, and there is nobody in his life who would tell him.

Here is the evening it caught.

His son, who is twenty-six and lives at home and misses nothing, came in for water at midnight and saw his father standing in the dark with his hand on the phone, and did not say anything, and went back to bed. And the next morning, over coffee, without looking up, he said, "You still do that."

And Hector said, "Do what."

And his son said, "The phone."

And Hector said nothing at all, and went to work, and thought about it every hour of that day.

You have something like that. A prayer that has worn all the way down until it is a gesture, a hand on a thing, a look at a door. And you have quietly decided that this does not count as praying, because it does not sound like the praying you used to do.

The Phone He Keeps Charged

Two things, noticed separately

Let me put down what I am not doing here, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to tell you your daughter is going to call. I do not know, and it would be an obscene thing for a stranger to promise about somebody else's child. I am not going to tell you what happened, or whose fault it was, or what to do about any of it. I cannot see your family and I am not going to pretend a page can.

What I will do is take you to a sentence God sends to a man in bed, because of the way it is put together.

Hezekiah is dying. Isaiah has already told him to get his house in order. He turns his face to the wall and prays and weeps. And then Isaiah is sent back with this:

Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee.2 Kings 20:5

Stop at the two clauses in the middle. I have heard thy prayer. I have seen thy tears.

Those are two separate observations, listed separately, joined by nothing. God does not say, I heard your prayer, which was accompanied by weeping. He lists them as two items. The words, and the water. Both received. Both noted. Both, apparently, worth mentioning.

You have been sending two things all along, and the second one has been arriving as reliably as the first. 2 Kings 20:5 lists the tears as their own line item, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that off the page and into a dark kitchen at midnight.

That matters enormously for a man with his hand on a phone. Because what Hector thinks he has stopped doing is the first item. And what he has never once stopped doing is the second.

You were never reduced to the quality of your sentences, and Scripture puts the wordless part of a man in the same verse as the spoken part. It is written that God saw the tears as well as heard the prayer, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an ancient pair of clauses a present relief.

What a worn prayer actually is

Now let me be careful here, because this is exactly where a message like this goes wrong.

I am not telling you that eleven years of erosion is a good thing or a deeper form of prayer. It is not a spiritual achievement that Hector's prayer has become a hand on a counter. Something has been ground down in that man and I am not going to dress it up as maturity.

But I am also not going to let him believe the lie that is growing in the middle of it, which is that he has stopped.

Look at what he actually does. He keeps the number. He pays for a plan he does not need. He plugs it in. He puts his hand on it. Every single night for eleven years, without fail, at some cost, aimed at one person, in the presence of God.

There is a word for a daily, costly, deliberate act performed in God's presence on behalf of somebody who is absent. The word is not nothing.

You have been praying every night of the last eleven years, and the fact that it stopped sounding like praying does not change what it is. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps our weakness with groanings that cannot be uttered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an unspeakable thing and carries it as prayer.

And let me say this here rather than at the end, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If eleven years of that counter at midnight has taken you somewhere darker than grief, or if there are nights when the not knowing is more than you can hold, do not stand in that kitchen alone with it. Tell somebody tonight. Your son, your brother, your doctor, a counselor, or the 988 crisis line if you live in the United States. That is not me saying anything about your daughter. That is me refusing to leave you standing in the dark by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this stage of the road asks of you, and it is very small.

It does not ask you to call her. It does not ask you not to call her. It does not ask you to find her, write to her, forgive anything on a schedule, or produce any feeling whatsoever. I cannot see your family and I am not going to hand a father instructions about his own child from behind a screen.

It asks you to say it out loud once, in words, with the phone in your hand.

Not because the gesture was insufficient. It was not. But because a man who has gone eleven years without hearing his own voice say the thing begins to believe he no longer has it in him, and that belief is a lie, and the shortest way through a lie like that is to hear yourself say the sentence.

You are still able to say it out loud, and the ability was never lost, only unused. 2 Kings 20:5 has a man who could not get out of bed producing both a prayer and tears, and the Holy Spirit is the one who helps a worn-down person get a sentence out.

You have been heard on every one of the nights when nothing at all was said, and the record of those nights is not in your keeping. It is written that He had seen the tears, and His Spirit is the one who carries an ancient seeing into a kitchen at midnight.

You are held by a God who noticed the water and the words as two separate things, which means nothing you brought has ever gone in unread. 2 Kings 20:5 lists them separately on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a settled fact rather than a comforting reading.

Whether she calls, and when, and what happens after, is His and I will not date it, forecast it, or describe it. I do not know. What tonight settles is that it has all been received.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in the kitchen in the dark. Not because saying them moves anything: the moving is His, and He saw the tears on the nights there were no words at all. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. What He does about your daughter, and when, is His to decide, in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Years of nothing on that screen, you are not a message from God and you never were. Second Kings 20 says I have heard your prayer and seen your tears, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me now. I am not reading you as an answer.
  2. Belief that I stopped praying, go, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God listed the tears beside the words as two things He had received, and the same Spirit who carried that verse carries me, so eleven years of a hand on a counter went up as prayer.
  3. Lord, You have heard my prayer and You have seen my tears, and 2 Kings 20:5 is where You said both to a man who could not get out of bed. I thank You that the water counted as well as the words, and by Your Spirit I am saying her name out loud again tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
